We Talk, We Heal: Miss Bahamas Teen Marks World Suicide Prevention Day

The Miss Bahamas Teen Organization marked World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September with a message to its community, shared as a short video under the title “We Talk, We Heal.”

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on 10 September, coordinated by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in partnership with the World Health Organization. Its theme for the 2024–2026 cycle is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” and its call to action is deliberately a simple one: start the conversation. The premise behind it is that silence and stigma are what keep people from reaching out, and that ordinary, honest conversations are often what make asking for help possible.

What the day asks of all of us:

  • Start the conversation: speaking openly about mental health helps replace shame with understanding, and makes it easier for someone struggling to say so.
  • Check in: a direct, unhurried question to a friend, classmate or family member — and the willingness to listen to the answer — matters more than having the perfect words.
  • Know where to turn: support exists, it is confidential, and knowing the number before it is needed means it is there when it is.

Support is available here in The Bahamas. The National Hotline for Crisis Intervention, operated by the Department of Social Services, runs 24 hours a day: (242) 322-2763 or (242) 422-2763 for New Providence and the Family Islands, and (242) 351-7763 in Grand Bahama. In an emergency, call 911. Reaching out is a sign of strength, and no concern is too small to raise.

For an organisation built around young women — and around the confidence, character and self-image its programme exists to develop — the message carries particular weight. Miss Bahamas Teen joins organisations across the world in marking the day, and in the reminder at the heart of it: talking helps, and no one has to carry it alone.
